One tempo at a time

The web metronome holds one tempo. Gradus: Metronome for iPhone climbs through a sequence of tempos on its own: set the steps, and the click moves for you.

It is not on the App Store yet.

Eleven eighth notes per bar, with Tempo measured in eighth notes per minute. It can help to learn the bar as a sequence of smaller groups. Grouping offers 3+3+3+2, 2+2+3+2+2, 3+3+2+3 and 2+2+2+2+3, with a loud click at the start of each group.

The 2+2+3+2+2 pattern is associated with Bulgarian kopanitsa dances. Count two short groups, a longer group, then two more short groups, keeping the eighth notes even. For another piece, follow its own grouping or build an accent pattern with the beat buttons.

At ♪ = 240, a bar lasts 2.75 seconds. Start wherever you can follow the whole pattern without losing the next downbeat. Try clapping the accents before adding the notes of your part.
